Roselia's access to both Spikes and Toxic Spikes, as well as Sleep Powder, makes it a very potent lead for Toxic stall teams, and teams that attempt to set up multiple entry hazards. Sleep Powder is used on the first turn to put the foe's lead to sleep, while Toxic Spikes is generally used after Sleep Powder to infect the rest of the foe's team with poison (bar Flying-types, Steel-types, Levitate Pokemon and Poison-types). Hidden Power Ice hits lead Gligar, Golbat and Murkrow for serious damage, whose main reflex is to use Taunt on Roselia to prevent Sleep Powder or Toxic Spikes setup, while Leaf Storm provides Roselia a OHKO on any form of Croconaw, Marshtomp, Nosepass, Sealeo or Rhydon. Natural Cure is the preferred ability for this set in that some leads such as Golbat, Murkrow and Bronzor, will opt to put Roselia to sleep, or paralyze it, both of which can be cured by switching Roselia. This allows it to come out later in the game and continue with setting up entry hazards unhindered by status.

This set works well as a surprise for Haunter, Kadabra, Scarf Cranidos and Gligar, who all expect to outspeed and KO Roselia. The first moveslot is heavily dependant on who your team is more weak to - Sneasel or Electabuzz/Magmar. Hidden Power Ground is always a 2HKO on Electabuzz and Magmar, but the surprise factor is what makes it work - Any Electabuzz or Magmar switching into Roselia expecting Leaf Storm or hoping to outspeed and KO it will be rudely surprised by being outsped the next turn, and KOed. Without Hidden Power Fighting, however, Roselia has no way to effectively OHKO Sneasel, and foes who discover that Roselia is faster than Sneasel will immediately opt for Ice Shard the next turn to attack Roselia, which results in a OHKO almost all the time. On the other hand, Shadow Ball is a guaranteed OHKO on Haunter. While Scarf Haunter will outspeed, Haunter's Shadow Ball is never a OHKO on Roselia, nor is Hidden Power Ice, factoring in Stealth Rock damage.

Energy Ball is Roselia's best option for a STAB move, although Leaf Storm is a fine option for Roselia in that it will likely switch after attacking the foe once or twice. If you opt for Hidden Power Ground, it should be noted that Leaf Storm is Roselia's only alternative way of KOing Sneasel. With Stealth Rock taken into consideration. Energy Ball and Hidden Power Ground together mean Sneasel can always come in and Ice Punch Roselia for a OHKO. Extrasensory is mainly filler on this set, proving to be Roselia's most powerful option. However, it scores a 2HKO on any form of Machoke, and OHKOs the majority of Monfernos, something that none of Roselia's other attacks can manage.

216 Speed with a Timid Nature puts Roselia at a Speed of 363, effectively outspeeding Jolly Sneasel, and any Pokemon aiming to outspeed Sneasel by one point. No other notable Pokemon are outsped with additional Speed, allowing EVs to be dumped into Defense, which makes Sneasel's Ice Shard only a 53% chance of OHKOing Roselia, rather than a 92% chance via Ice Shard.

This set works on teams who have an easier time working against Haunter, Magmar and Sneasel, and who need the extra attacking power to take down foes such as Gligar, max Sp Def Tangela and Dragonair, all feats that couldn't be done with the Scarf set. Roselia can still KO Haunter, however. Extrasensory may seem an attractive move on Roselia to aid in taking down Machoke and Monferno, but it should be noted that Sludge Bomb in itself is already a 2HKO, the same as Extrasensory.

Team Benefit misdreavus haunter poliwhirl marshtomp

Roselia deserves the title of the best Spikes setter in NFE thanks to its very high Speed and manageable defenses, as well as access to Sleep Powder. Using Roselia as a lead means at least one foe is left immobilized by Sleep Powder (assuming it hits), while giving Roselia a golden opportunity to set up Spikes or Toxic Spikes. Having a Ghost-type to block Rapid Spin makes Roselia much more useful in that it doesn't sacrifice itself to set up Spikes that are simply spun away. Misdreavus fits this bill well, carrying a neutrality to Psychic, while being able to use Thunderbolt on common Rapid Spinners such as Staryu. Haunter is also a good option, but shares a Psychic weakness with Roselia.

If you opt for Toxic Spikes on your team, be sure to not let Roselia faint too early; a simple switch to a grounded Poison-type ends Toxic Spikes for good, effectively wasting a turn or two that Roselia used to set the Toxic Spikes up. Fortunately, very few viable OU Poison-types are present, bar opposing Roselias. Luring said Roselia with Marshomp or Poliwhirl may flush it out from your foe's team, acknowledging a player that the opposing Roselia should be taken down before Toxic Spikes are set up. For a Toxic stall team, Marshtomp fits the bill better with access to Stealth Rock, and overall higher defenses.

Counters sneasel mantyke togetic metang golbat haunter

Sneasel isn't KOed by anything that Roselia packs outside of the rare Hidden Power Fighting, and can KO Roselia with Ice Punch, or even Ice Shard if one fears the Scarf set. Mantyke is at worst 2HKOed by Roselia, and can KO back with one Ice Beam. Togetic isn't scathed by anything but a STAB Sludge Bomb, is immune to Shadow Ball, and can set up Nasty Plot on Roselia, and then KO back with Hidden Power Flying. It can also shut down the offensive sets with Thunder Wave if they choose to carry Poison Point. Metang is resistant to all of Roselia's most common attacks, and can hit with Ice Punch or a STAB Meteor Mash. Golbat can take down the lead set by shrugging off Leaf Storm, and outspeeding and KOing with Air Slash or Heat Wave, although one must be wary of Stun Spore or Sleep Powder. Haunter laughs at anything but a neutral Hidden Power Ice, and can outspeed and 2HKO Roselia with Shadow Ball.
